Margin Trading Facility (MTF)

MTF is a leveraged product that allows investors to buy stocks by paying only a fraction of the trade value upfront, with the rest funded by the broker. Interest is charged on the borrowed amount for as long as the position is held.

Background

MTF launched on Groww in December 2023 as a way to offer leveraged trading to users while also opening up a new revenue stream for the business. I was the sole product designer on the team from day one.

From the start, I anchored my design approach around two core principles: inform with clarity and communicate with transparency.

MTF is a powerful feature, but also a complex and higher-risk one. When users buy stocks through MTF, their own funds are combined with the broker’s, and that can lead to confusion if not handled carefully.

There are many moving parts such as margin requirements, interest accrual, and loan closure. The only way to build trust was to make every interaction clear, honest, and easy to understand.

Placing an MTF Order

Monitoring Positions

For MTF users, monitoring positions is one of the most important steps. Since these are leveraged trades, it’s crucial to keep track of how much return they’ve gained on their collateral, how much of their own funds are invested, and how their position is performing overall.

Monitoring Leverage

Taking a leveraged position is essentially borrowing money from the broker to place a trade. We designed a space where users can clearly see how much they’ve borrowed in total, along with a breakdown of how much they’ve invested, how much is borrowed, and the interest paid on each position.

This level of visibility was intentional, and closely aligned with our values of being a transparent and trustworthy broker.

Position messaging

MTF has a lot of moving parts and edge cases that require clear, ongoing communication with the user. To ensure users always know what’s happening with their position, I developed a flexible messaging framework that allowed the team to surface timely, contextual updates whenever such cases arose.
